Biography
Bill McMahon's COVER is currently in development for an Off-Broadway production ater having been produced in the 2014 Midtown International Theater Festival to sold-out houses and several fine reviews. RANDOM was named a finalist for the Mildred and Albert Panowski Playwriting Award. MISSING THE 4:55 was named a winner in the Slippery Rock University One-Act Play Contest. (PARANTHETICALS), a collection of his one-acts that includes MISSING THE 4:55, received an Honorable Mention for the Eric Bentley New Play Competition. Bill was also the winner of the Paul Green Playwrights Prize for his full-length play A WINTER BEAUTY, produced by Emerging Artists Theatre to several glowing reviews. Irene Backaleneck of Backstage: "His ability to create rich, believable characters and sharp, funny dialogue makes for a very special play...a strong new Off- Broadway voice." A WINTER BEAUTY was also chosen the winner of the SNAP!fest Competition by Snap Productions in Omaha, NE; it was produced there. BLIND CORNER, a finalist for the Julie Harris Playwriting Award, was also a semi-finalist for the O'Neill Conference as well as a semi-finalist for the Dramarama Competition. It received a workshop by Emerging Artists and a developmental reading by the Abingdon Theatre in New York City. Bill also wrote the book for ALPHAGIRLS, a children's musical, with music and lyrics by Bob McDowell; it was chosen as a finalist for the Richard Rodgers Award, and a finalist for the Jackie White Memorial Children's Playwriting Contest.
His plays have also been produced at Expanded Arts, Emerging Artists, Playwrights Horizons/The Collective, American Theatre of Actors in New York; Full Figure Productions in Los Angeles; The Shelterbelt Theatre in Omaha and S.T.A.G.E. in Dallas. His one-act THE NEW BLACK was a finalist for the Samuel French Competition, the Arts & Letters Prize, The Nantucket Short Play Festival and a winner of the Moving Arts Premiere One-Act Festival in L.A. ASKED AND ANSWERED was a finalist for the prestigious Ensemble Studio Theatre's Marathon of One-Act Plays, as well as receiving Honorable Mention in the Attic Theatre Ensemble's One-Act Marathon. PEARLS AND DIGNITY was also short listed for the Ensemble Studio Theatre Marathon, and was included in the Samuel French Festival.
Two of Bill's pieces have been published by Smith and Kraus as part of their collection THE BEST WOMEN'S STAGE MONOLOGUES. Recently published: DISCOVERING GENRE: DRAMA, a high school drama textbook employing classic works of Ibsen, Shaw and Chekhov to illustrate dramatic structure, character and theme. Bill’s current projects include his three-act epic play WORLD OF TOMORROW, based on the life and work of Robert Moses and his battles with Jane Jacobs, as well as a screenplay adaptation for Hudson Film Group.
